Holiday Break

First Semester is beginning to wind down and I am sure many of us are ready for a Holiday Break.  YouLearn Offices will be closed from Dec 21 to Jan 7, 2013.  If anyone would like to discuss new courses in the New Year please email me at spozzobon@sd53.bc.ca.

In addition, please email me or stop in to one of our Learning Centres if you would like to discuss University programs and how to begin applying to various programs.  On a more local note, Okanagan College Penticton Campus will be offering programs in Carpentry, Plumbing, and Heating and Refrigeration early in 2013.

Have a great Holiday everyone and a very happy New Year.

As the year winds down

Yes another successful year is coming to an end. Students have many concerns as the year winds down such as how can I apply for college, or can I work on courses over the summer, do I have to complete my course by the end of June? or if not will I have to start from the beginning again in September.

Many college programs will accept students right up until the beginning of September. For example first year science at Okanagan College in Penticton often has space in their program as the school year starts in September. Be careful procrastinating when it comes to registering in college programs however, as many programs fill long before the September start.

Students wanting to work on their courses over the summer have some options. Firstly, students can sign out textbooks on a long term loan basis and work throughout the summer on assignments then submit them in September. If you wish to write tests or have assignmetns marked over the summer please see your counsellor or administartor.

Lastly, if you do not finish your course by summer, breath easy as you will not have to start the course over in Septmeber right from the beginning. One of the beauties of our program is that most courses are continuous, meaning that you work at your own pace and if you have to take a break, you can restart and pick up where you left off at a later time.

Have a great June, see you graduation!

Many students have been using the YouLearn Counselling Centre this month for career counselling as they decide which electives they should take on the road to a new career. By the end of October many of the college and university medical programs will start taking applications and many are on a first come first served basis. If you are interested in applying to our local Okanagan College or other institutions in our area, please visit the Counselling centre for application deadlines, prerequisite information, and application assistance.

Okanagan College will be offering The Medical Office Assistant program in the South Okanagan beginning in January and potential students are urged to apply as soon as possible. The Counselling Centre has important information concerning prerequisites, course fees, and the possibility of Dual Credit whereby you can earn credits toward your high school diploma will taking courses through the college. Students who qualify for Dual Credit also have the potential opportunity to have some of their college education funded by School District 53. Drop by the Counselling Centre if you are interested.

Work Experience courses and Apprenticeship programs have become a strong focus for many students attending the YouLearn campuses. Students can use Work Experience to count as diploma credits in addition to gaining valuable work experience that may lead to future opportunities. The Okanagan-Similkameen area offers the potential for Apprenticeship programs in various areas including welding, cooking, mechanics, and carpentry to name a few. Our school district currently has some students graduating with their second year apprenticeship training already completed. As with Dual Credit, students may potentially qualify for apprenticeship training funds through School District 53. This is an exciting opportunity that many students will want to take advantage of.

If any of the above programs seem interesting, be sure to stop in at our YouLearn Counselling Centre. We will be glad to help you with any questions.

Gearing Up For A Successful Year

As the month of September begins students are registering for various courses offered at the Learning Centres throughout the South Okanagan and Similkameen Valley. Teachers as well have been busy updating technology courses and preparing to offer a variety of new courses in the coming year.

Advanced internet courses along with more indepth course offerings for digital media are sure to be popular and classes will most likely fill fairly quickly. If you are interested in any additional information regarding these courses or our new business management course or the digial music course please ask school counsellor Steve for information at spozzobo@sd53.bc.ca.

If you are upgrading for university entrance Steve can help you with pre-requisite information as well as application deadlines. The first week in November is always a busy application time as many college programs open during this time and many like the Okanagan College Nursing programs are first come first served. See Steve for more information.
